Using the correct needle for the task will make a big difference in the appearance and the quality of the stitching.
As there are many different types of needles, be sure to read the description of each needle type below and
match the needle to the task that you want to do.

Please remember that hand sewing needles, just like machine sewing needles
will dull with use and need to be replaced.

The larger the number, the smaller the needle.

Milliners/Straw Needles by Richard Hemming

The best needle for bullion roses is one with a long, even shaft. With a milliners/straw needle, neither the eye nor the shaft will distort the wrap of the floss. The eye is a slightly smaller than most needles but is easily threaded. Also great for gathering.
Not as flimsy as a beading needle. Also used for English Paper Piecing

Olympus Sashiko Needles

The two needles in this package from Japan are 2” and 2 ½” in length. This makes it easy to spread out the stitches to check for accuracy in length before pulling the thread through the fabric. The gold eyes make the needles easier to thread but a needle threader is very helpful.

These needles are longer, stronger, more rigid and sharper than traditional needles making it easier to stitch long sections before pulling the needle through.
Perfect for working with all weights of Sashiko thread but are particularly good for the regular/thick weight threads.
