Sashiko/Quilting Stencils and Marking Supplies

These high quality stencils are a wonderful way to transfer a Sashiko or quilting design to your fabric. They are available in a number of sizes and designs. Simply prepare your fabric, lay the stencil on top and trace the design. Use the white or light gray chalk marking pencil for dark colour fabrics or the aquarelle graphite pencil for light colour fabrics. There is no need to press with a heavy hand, simply use enough pressure so that the design is visible. Then you are ready to stitch using the sashiko threads in the weight of your choice.

Pastel Chalk Marking Pencils

These chalk pencils are wonderful as they are made of a mixture of chalk and clay. The chalk will generally rub off while you are quilting/stitching, however the clay will remain on your fabric for the duration of the stitching. When finished the remaining chalk and clay can be brushed off with a terry-cloth washcloth, erased with a fabric eraser or washed in cool water. They contain no chemicals and are of archival quality. It is always a good idea to test any pencil before using it on your project. Each pencil comes with a clear lid to protect the point.

The extender, is useful when the pencil becomes short and harder to use.

Graphite Pencil

This pencil is pure graphite and contains no wax. It is the wax that normally binds marks to your quilt top. A majority will rub off while you are stitching, however, a light line should remain on your top for the duration of your stitching. Since there is no wax, this pencil creates a dark line easily--the graphite pencil is not for use with a heavy hand--only mark as light as you need to see. Marks can be erased with a fabric eraser or washed in cool water. These graphite pencils contain no chemicals and are of archival quality.

This extra soft white vinyl eraser contains no oil products which can leave smudge marks or residue.

Pencil Sharpeners

The chalk marking pencils should only be sharpened with a hand sharpener such as shown above. You want one that has a sharp blade in it.
The dual sharpener has two sizes of holes.
